Privacy Policy
We want you to know exactly what information we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control it. This page explains everything in plain, simple language.
When you use Flipgrid, we collect some information so the platform works properly for you. Here is what we collect:
Information you give us directly:
- Your name and email address when you create an account
- Your school or organization name (if you are a teacher)
- Videos and audio recordings you make inside the app
- Text you type, such as discussion prompts or comments
- Profile picture or avatar you choose to upload
Information collected automatically:
- What device you use (phone, tablet, or computer)
- Your internet browser type
- Which pages or features inside Flipgrid you visit
- The time and date you use the app
- Your general location (country or city, not your home address)
We only use your information for good reasons. Here is why we need it:
- To run Flipgrid — so you can log in, record videos, and see discussions.
- To make it better — we look at how people use the app so we can fix problems and add helpful features.
- To keep you safe — we check for things that should not be on the platform.
- To send you important messages — like when a teacher posts a new topic or when something changes in your account.
- To follow the law — sometimes we are required by law to keep or share certain information.
Flipgrid is built for classrooms, which means many of our users are children. We take this very seriously.
For students under 13 years old:
- A teacher or school must set up the account — students cannot sign up on their own.
- Videos and content made by students are only visible to their teacher and classmates inside their group.
- We collect only the minimum information needed for the student to use the app.
- We follow the United States COPPA law and other country-specific child protection laws.
Schools and teachers are responsible for getting the correct permission from parents before using Flipgrid with students. Flipgrid provides tools to help teachers do this easily.
We do not share your information with many people. Here is a simple list of who may see your data and why:
- Microsoft — Flipgrid is part of Microsoft. Microsoft stores and secures your data on their servers.
- Your teacher or school — Teachers can see the videos and responses you post inside your class group.
- Service helpers — Some companies help us run Flipgrid, for example storing videos or sending emails. They can only use your data to help us, not for anything else.
- When the law requires it — If a court or government office asks us for information by law, we must provide it.
A cookie is a very small file saved on your device when you visit a website. Think of it like a name tag — it helps the website remember who you are so you do not have to log in every single time.
Flipgrid uses cookies for these reasons:
- To keep you logged in — so you do not have to enter your password on every page.
- To remember your settings — like your language or how you like things displayed.
- To understand how people use the app — so we can fix problems and make Flipgrid better.
We do not use cookies to show you advertisements. You can manage or turn off cookies in your browser settings. If you turn off all cookies, some parts of Flipgrid may not work correctly.
You have rights over your own information. Here is what you can do:
To use any of these rights, email us at [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.
We use strong security measures to protect your information. Here is what we do:
- Encryption — All data sent between you and Flipgrid is locked so no one else can read it on the way.
- Secure servers — Your videos and information are stored on Microsoft’s secure cloud servers.
- Access controls — Only a small number of trained staff can access your information, and only when needed.
- Regular checks — We regularly test our systems to look for security problems and fix them fast.
Sometimes we need to update this privacy policy. This can happen when we add new features, when laws change, or when we improve how we protect your data.
When we make an important change, we will:
- Post a notice inside the Flipgrid app so you can see it when you log in.
- Send an email to the address linked to your account.
- Update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
If you keep using Flipgrid after we post a change, it means you are okay with the new policy. If you are not okay with a change, you can stop using Flipgrid and ask us to delete your account.
